Your First Western Hunt: What to Expect

Your First Western Hunt: What to Expect
A lot of first-timers show up wound tight, expecting a boot-camp march up a mountain. It is not that. A good guided hunt has a rhythm, and once you settle into it, it is the best week of the year.\n\nMost days start well before light. We glass from a good vantage at first shooting light, because that is when elk and deer are on their feet and moving. If we spot something, we plan a stalk and use the terrain and wind to close the gap. Middays are for resting, eating, and repositioning — animals bed down and so do smart hunters. Evenings, we are back out glassing until dark.\n\nYou do not need to be a marathon runner. You need to be in reasonable shape, willing to walk, and ready to sit still when it counts. Your guide reads the country, calls the shots, and does the heavy lifting on game care. Your job is to be steady when the moment comes. We will get you there.
